Atletico Madrid and France striker Antoine Griezmann has shocked Barcelona by announcing he will be staying on at Atletico Madrid.
Antoine Griezmann, who is currently on duty at the World Cup in Russia with France, decided to release his decision to stay on at Barcelona in a documentary called La Decision aired on French TV.
The 27-year-old will now stay on with Atletico Madrid after coach Diego Simeone convinced the striker to stay and win trophies with the club.
Griezmann told the documentary: “I have decided to stay” at the end of the documentary.
The decision has come as a shock to Barcelona who were 100% confident of signing the French international striker.
Spanish media outlet Marca is reporting a big fallout at Barcelona over Griezmanns decision. Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu was so convinced he got his man that he communicated the arrival of the player to his staff with preparations underway to unveil the player after the World Cup.
Griezmann was expected to sign for Premier League giants Manchester United summer but decided to stay loyal to Atleti who were serving a transfer ban last summer.
Atletico announced earlier this week that they had signed a preliminary agreement with Griezmann’s France international team-mate Thomas Lemar to join them this summer. However, we are not sure if Griezmann staying on with Atletico will change that.
Both players will be in action for France tomorrow when they open their World Cup campaign in Russia against Australia.
The French go into this summers competition as one of the pre-tournament favourites and will be hoping to get their campaign off to a win by claiming three points.
