Barcelona are planning a summer swoop for RB Leipzig and France under-21 defender Dayot Upamecano as the face up to the possibility of losing Samuel Umtiti.
Upamecano, who only joined RB Leipzig from sister club RB Salzburg last summer has been in fine form in his debut season in the Bundesliga. His form has brought him to the attention of Europe’s top clubs with Barcelona the favourites to land the giant French defender this summer.
Barcelona faces the prospect of losing Samuel Umtiti this summer after failing to agree on a new contract at the club. With clubs monitoring Umititi’s situation closely, Barca are now putting plans in place to make sure they are not short on cover should the France international centre-back decide to leave.
Upamecano recently told French website Telefoot that he dreams of playing for bigger clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona in the future, which will only give Ernesto Valverde encouragement to make a move for the giant defender.
The 19-year-old told the French website: “As a youngster, you dream of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, but to get there, you have to work.
“I’m very proud of myself, very happy. I have to keep going in the same direction. I have to aim higher. My preference for the moment is Leipzig. Afterwards, we’ll see.”
RB Leipzig have placed a €100m price-tag on the player they signed for €10m less than one-year ago from RB Salzburg.
The player is currently a France under-21 international and has yet to win his first international cap. However, he dreams of breaking into the national team squad soon.
“All the great players play for their national teams. I would also like to be called up one day. I know I’m on the right track, so I have to keep going like this.”
Since his arrival to RB last summer, he has been ever present in the Leipzig defence making 35 appearances, scoring 1 goal.
