German champions Bayern Munich have won the race to sign Schalke and Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free-transfer.
Goretzka, will join up with Bayern Munich on July 1st, when his currently contract with Schalke will expire.
The 22-year-old German international attracted interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs, but opted to stay in the Bundesliga. Teams such a Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool where all linked with the midfielder.
Only last month, it was expected that Goretzka would be moving onto the Premier League and join up with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. However, Bayern made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
Schalke Sporting director Christian Heidel announced to a press conference on Friday that the player will be moving onto German champions Bayern.
“Leon Goretzka informed us earlier this week that he wishes to leave the club and join Bayern.
“We where very sorry to hear this. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told us yesterday that Leon has completed a medical. We are losing a very, very good player.
“We can competed with this situation, it wasn’t a complete surprise. We are prepared for this.”
Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also confirmed the signing by stating to the media: “We are happy that Leon has decided, despite considerable competition from abroad, to sign for FC Bayern.”
The German midfielder is expected to be part of the final 23-man squad for Russia 2018 this summer. Pending any major injury, many are tipping him to be one of the big stars of this summers World Cup.
Goretzka, signed for Schalke in 2013 from German side Vfl Bochum. After spending 5-years with Schalke he has decided it is time to move on to a bigger challenge.
