Croatia thumped Argentina 3-0 in their Group D game with Jorge Sampoli’s men now on the brink of elimination from the World Cup.
The Croatian’s outplayed Argentina who was one of the tournament’s favourites.
Three second-half goals from Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic sealed Argentina’s worst World Cup loss in their history.
The Argentines lacked creativity throughout the whole match and played with no cohesion or togetherness with many fans leaving the stadium angry and disgusted at their team’s performance.
The first-half ended goalless with Croatia unlucky to go in the break with a couple of goals to their name. Argentina road their luck and were thankful that the scoresheets remained blank at the interval.
Not even a huge support that outnumbered the Croatians by three to one could help and inspire Argentina into a second-half performance that would claim them their first three-points of Russia 2018.
With 53 minutes on the clock, the Argies exploded with Chelsea reserve keeper Willy Cabellero chipping a back-pass straight into the path of Ante Rebic who volleyed the ball home superbly. A massive gift for Croatia who well deserved the lead.
With ten minutes left and no signs of a comeback from Argentina, Luka Modric stepped up and placed a right-footed curling shot from outside the box past Cabellero to make it 2-0. The Croatian fans were jumping for joy while the Argentine fans could not believe what was happening.
And in injury time Ivan Rakatic rubbed salt into the wounds of the Argies when he slotted the ball home from close range to make it 3-0 on the night, and Croatia into the last-16 of the World Cup.
Jorge Sampoli’s men will now go into their last game against Nigeria needing a win to secure a spot in the last-16.
