Atletico Madrid striker and legend Fernando Torres has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the current season.
Torres, who joined Atletico back in 2016, has struggled for form this season and has hardly made Diego Simeone’s first eleven. Since the arrival of Diego Costa, he has been put back down further on the list of strikers at the club.
Back in January he almost joined the Chinese Super League after an attractive financial offer was made to him. However, he decided to stay on with Atletico after deciding he didn’t fancy the move to China.
The 34-year-old will now leave at the end of the season becoming a free agent. He hopes it will allow him to stay on in Europe and play football at the top level.
Torres told the official Atletico Madrid website: “I’d like to take this opportunity to confirm that this is my last season at the club.
“I felt I should let the fans know, as they have given me so much love and affection.
“Both the club and I knew that this moment was going to come.
“I think it is the best moment, accepting the reality that I am in, you see the prominence that I have in the team and maybe it is time to make way for others.
“For me, it is very difficult to say goodbye to this club for the second time, because my head and my idea was to hang up my boots here.
“But things do not always work out the way you want. I feel very well and I want to continue playing.
Since his arrival, back in 2016, the player has gone onto to score only 10 goals in 51 games. During his first spell at the club, he scored 82 goals in 214 appearances bring him to the attention of some of the world biggest clubs.
He went onto play for Premier League giants Liverpool and Chelsea before moving home back to Atletico.
