Manchester United are close to signing Serbian international midfielder Nemenja Matic from Premier League champions Chelsea.
United hope to complete a deal for Matic in the next few days as Jose Mourinho continues his summer spending spree at Old Trafford.
We understand that United have agreed a £40 million fee with Chelsea for the midfielder, who made 40 appearances for the champions last term.
It is understood Juventus where also interested in the Serbian midfielder, but United’s offer was far superior to the Italian champions, and the prospect of linking up with his old mentor Mourinho was too good to turn down.
Chelsea, who recently signed Tiemoue Bakayoko from French champions Monaco, only decided to allow their midfield enforcer to leave and talk to other clubs once a suitable replacement was found.
It is understood Chelsea have allowed Matic to join United as a goodwill gesture because of his contribution to the club’s two Premier League titles in the last three years.
Chelsea would have preferred to have sold Matic to Juventus rather than a domestic rival, but the Serbia international, who was given permission to not travel with the rest of the Chelsea squad on their pre-season tour of China, wanted to move to United instead.
Matic is set to become the third new face at Old Trafford this summer following the arrival of Victor Lindelöf from Benfica and Romelu Lukaku from Everton.
In other news regarding United, Galatasaray are confident of signing United midfielder Marouane Fellaini, with the Turkish club’s president, Dursun Ozbek, due in Manchester on Monday or Tuesday to finalise a transfer.
An agreement has been reached in principle with Fellaini over a four-year contract worth in the region of £3.6m, which would make him their highest-paid player. The 29-year-old joined United from Everton for £27.5m in 2013.
