Manchester United have completed the signing of Porto full-back Diogo Dalot in a deal said to be worth in the region of £19m.
Diogo Dalot becomes Manchester United’s first official signing of the summer transfer window with Brazilian international Fred expected to join from Shakhtar Donetsk officially after the World Cup.
The 19-year-old Portuguese Under-21 international will come into the United squad to offer competition for current right-back Antonio Valencia. The signing surely means the Red Devil’s will be parting company with Italian defender Matteo Darmian during the summer transfer window.
United manager Jose Mourinho told the official ManUtd.Com website after the signing was confirmed: “Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club.
“He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physical, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.
“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”
Dalot also told the United official website: “Joining Manchester United is an unbelievable opportunity for me. I have grown up in Porto’s academy and I am so thankful for everything they have done for me. But the chance of coming to the biggest club in the world is something I just couldn’t turn down.
The defender has signed a five-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2023. United are expecting a big summer of transfer with Mourinho looking to overhaul his squad by bringing in younger and more attacking players. With two defensive minded players in Dalot and Fred now signed up, Mourinho will now be looking at more attacking options.
